KAMPALA — Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the death of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo following an incident that occurred on June 5, 2026.

The suspects have been identified as Mugwiisa Obed and Owino Joseph, a security guard. According to police, Mugwiisa was captured in video footage allegedly participating in the incident while wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log.

Investigators say that during interrogation, Mugwiisa led detectives to a local laundry where he had taken the yellow T-shirt seen in the footage. The garment was subsequently recovered and is expected to form part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation.

The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects in custody to ten as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding what authorities have described as an alleged mob killing.

Police said efforts are ongoing to identify, trace and arrest other individuals believed to have taken part in the attack.

“We remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with the law,” police said in a statement.

Authorities have pledged to provide further updates as investigations progress.

The statement was issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala.
