NEW YORK, United States — The United Nations has expressed deep concern over reported xenophobic attacks, harassment, and intimidation targeting migrants and foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, urging authorities to ensure accountability and protect affected communities.
In a statement issued by the Office of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres said he was “deeply concerned by reports of xenophobic attacks and acts of harassment and intimidation against migrants and foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, including in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape Province.” (un.org)
The statement, delivered by UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, strongly condemned the violence, warning against “criminal acts perpetrated by individuals inciting violence and exploiting socio-economic conditions.”
“Violence, vigilantism and all forms of incitement to hatred have no place in an inclusive, democratic society governed by the rule of law and respect for human rights,” the UN said.
The Secretary-General’s remarks came as South Africa marked Freedom Day, a national commemoration of the country’s transition from apartheid to democracy. Guterres extended “warm greetings to the people and Government of South Africa,” while highlighting the importance of reflecting on values of “freedom, dignity, equality and human rights.”
The UN statement also referenced South Africa’s historical struggle against apartheid, noting that it was “sustained through international and African solidarity,” and emphasized the country’s long-standing tradition of coexistence among diverse communities.
While acknowledging socio-economic challenges affecting social cohesion, the UN urged that any response must remain lawful and non-discriminatory.
“Addressing these concerns must always be conducted lawfully, without discrimination and in a manner that upholds the human rights and dignity of all people,” the statement read.
The UN also welcomed commitments by South African authorities to investigate criminal acts and hold perpetrators accountable through “prompt, thorough, independent and impartial” processes. It further noted government efforts to address corruption in immigration systems and implement the National Action Plan against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.
The statement added that the United Nations stands ready to support efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions, protecting vulnerable groups, and strengthening social cohesion.
“The Secretary-General underscores that sustained community engagement, respect for human rights, responsible leadership and accountability are essential to prevent further violence and to preserve peace and stability,” it concluded.
