KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan authorities have arrested at least 231 foreign nationals in a nationwide crackdown targeting illegal immigration and unlicensed business activity, according to officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The operations, led by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, saw 169 individuals detained in the Kampala suburb of Bukoto. Officials say many of those arrested were found without valid immigration documents and are suspected of involvement in illegal gaming and online scamming activities.

In a separate operation in Adjumani District, authorities arrested 62 Nigerian nationals accused of operating a church and engaging in business activities without the required work permits.

Spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi confirmed the arrests, stating that investigations are ongoing into possible visa violations and unlawful trading. He added that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to enforce immigration laws and regulate foreign participation in Uganda’s economy.

“Authorities have arrested more than 200 foreign nationals in a crackdown targeting illegal immigrants and undocumented business operators across Uganda,” Mundeyi said, noting that many suspects were operating outside the terms of their visas.

The enforcement operations have sparked mixed reactions online. Many Ugandans have welcomed the move, arguing that it protects local jobs and ensures compliance with the law. However, others have raised concerns about transparency in the enforcement process, calling on authorities to guard against corruption and ensure that arrests are handled lawfully.

Officials say the operations will continue as the government intensifies efforts to address illegal immigration and tighten oversight of foreign-owned businesses operating in the country.
