South Africa’s Romanda Hombir has been crowned Miss World Africa 2026 after reaching the Top 6 at the 73rd Miss World pageant held in Nha Trang, Vietnam.

The 27-year-old clinical audiologist from Mpumalanga secured the continental title after making a strong run through the competition, which culminated in the grand finale on Saturday, September 5.

Hombir entered the Top 40 after winning the African Head-to-Head Challenge before advancing through subsequent stages to reach the final six contestants.

Her finish represents South Africa’s strongest performance at Miss World since Rolene Strauss won the global crown in 2014.

Hombir’s achievement also placed her among the continental queens named following the announcement of the overall results.

The global crown went to Joheirry Mola of the Dominican Republic, while Spain’s Elisabeth Reynés was named first runner-up and Malaysia’s Taanusiya Chetty finished second runner-up. Chetty also won the Beauty with a Purpose award.

Hombir’s journey was not built solely around the pageant stage. Her Beauty with a Purpose work has focused on healthcare and advocacy, including efforts aimed at improving access to health services in underserved communities.

Africa also produced another Top 6 finalist in Eritrea’s Snit Habteab Tewoldemedhin. The Eritrean contestant, who was making history for her country, won the People’s Choice vote and reached the final six.

Nigeria’s Tamunosoye Karibi-George was another notable African performer, advancing to the Top 12 after winning the Miss World Africa Top Model title.

Kenya’s Trizah Muhenje Akala also reached the Top 20, giving the continent several strong placements in the competition.

The 2026 pageant was the first time Vietnam hosted Miss World, with the finale held at April 2nd Square in Nha Trang.

For South Africa, however, the night belonged to Hombir.

Her continental victory raises an interesting question about the modern pageant: is the crown still primarily about beauty, or has the competition become something closer to a global marketplace of stories, causes and national identity?

Hombir’s performance suggests that the answer is increasingly the latter. Beauty may open the door; purpose determines how far a contestant travels.
