KAMPALA — Police have arrested a private security guard accused of stealing cash and gold worth over Shs500 million from a client’s vehicle in Kampala.

According to the Uganda Police Force, the suspect, Akena Justine, was attached to Magnum Security Company and deployed at Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road at the time of the incident.

Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the theft occurred on April 10, 2026.

“We wish to confirm the arrest of Akena Justine… in connection with a theft that occurred on 10th April 2026,” Owoyesigyire said.

He added that the suspect allegedly stole a bag containing Shs29 million in cash and 900 grams of gold valued at approximately Shs500 million from a motor vehicle belonging to Katuramu Maggie.

“At the time of the incident, he had been deployed to guard the premises… Following the theft, Akena reportedly locked up the premises and went into hiding,” Owoyesigyire said.

Arrest in Bweyale

Police said the suspect was tracked and arrested five days later in Gaspa Village, Bweyale Town Council.

“On 15th April 2026 at about 2230 hours, the suspect was successfully arrested… Upon interrogation, he admitted to committing the offence,” Owoyesigyire said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Akena used part of the stolen money to start a retail business.

“He had used part of the stolen money to open a retail shop, from where he was apprehended,” police noted.

The suspect is currently detained at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue.

“He is currently in custody… as preparations for prosecution are underway,” Owoyesigyire added.

Police said efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen money and gold, as well as to establish whether other individuals were involved in the theft.
