KAMPALA — SC Villa captain David Owori has died after he was allegedly attacked by thugs in Kampala, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

According to information released by SC Villa, Owori sustained serious injuries during the attack on Tuesday night and was rushed to Case Hospital for treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The club announced his passing in a brief statement, describing it as a devastating loss to the record Uganda Premier League champions.

Owori had been serving as captain of the Jogoos and was widely respected for his leadership on and off the pitch. His death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football fraternity, with fans, teammates and rival clubs expressing condolences to his family and the club.

By Wednesday afternoon, details surrounding the circumstances of the alleged attack remained unclear. Neither the Uganda Police Force nor Case Hospital had issued an official statement on the incident.

SC Villa said more information would be communicated as it becomes available.

Owori’s death comes as another tragic blow to Ugandan sport following recent incidents involving athletes, prompting renewed concern over the safety and security of sports personalities.
