Police investigating the murder of Villa Football Club captain Owor David have arrested two suspects after tracing the mobile phone allegedly stolen from the deceased.
Investigators established that Owor was robbed of an iPhone 14 Pro Max during the incident that led to his death. Tracking of the stolen phone reportedly led police to two suspects identified as Munyaneza Bashir, alias “Jemo”, a suspected dealer in stolen mobile phones, and his associate, Magoba Samuel.
Police said a search conducted in connection with the investigation led to the recovery of four bags containing dozens of suspected stolen mobile phones and other electronic devices.
The recovered items include 80 iPhones, 40 Samsung phones, eight Redmi phones, two Tecno phones, two Infinix phones, two Vivo phones and three button phones.
Investigators also recovered four phone motherboards, three iPads and several SIM cards belonging to MTN, Safaricom, Airtel and Lyca networks.
Other items recovered include ladies’ bags containing identification documents, phone covers and hard drives.
Police said the recovery has opened a wider line of inquiry into the suspected mobile phone theft network.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the full network and link the exhibits to reported cases,” police said.
The two suspects are expected to assist investigators in establishing how the phone allegedly taken from Owor came into their possession and whether they are connected to other reported cases of phone theft.
Owor, who served as captain of Villa Football Club, was killed in circumstances that prompted a police investigation. His death has drawn attention from the football fraternity, with investigators now pursuing both the murder and the suspected criminal network linked to the stolen phone.
Police said further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
