KAMPALA, Uganda — Police in Kampala have recovered approximately 80 motorcycles suspected to have been stolen and arrested nine suspects during an intelligence-led operation in Rubaga Division targeting criminal networks linked to motorcycle robberies.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the operation was conducted by Kampala Metropolitan Police North in Munaku Zone, Lubya Parish, following investigations into a series of robbery incidents involving motorcycles.
The breakthrough came on June 16, 2026, when intelligence officers traced two motorcycles believed to have been used in a robbery in Muyenga to a parking yard in Munaku Zone.
“The operation followed ongoing investigations into robbery cases involving motorcycles. Intelligence-led inquiries led officers to a parking yard in Munaku Zone where two motorcycles suspected to have been used in a robbery in Muyenga were recovered,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police investigations subsequently revealed that the same premises were allegedly being used as a source of motorcycles that were hired out and later used in the commission of criminal activities, particularly robberies within Kampala and surrounding areas.
Acting on the information, officers attached to Old Kampala Police Station, working alongside detectives and Scene of Crime Officers, conducted a comprehensive search of the premises.
“During the operation, about 80 motorcycles suspected to be stolen were recovered and taken to Old Kampala Police Station for safe custody,” Owoyesigyire stated.
Nine individuals were arrested during the operation and are currently being held in police custody as investigators work to establish the ownership of the recovered motorcycles and determine whether they are linked to other criminal activities.
“The suspects are pending interrogation and further investigations to establish the ownership of the recovered motorcycles and their possible connection to other criminal activities,” he added.
Police have appealed to members of the public who may have lost motorcycles through theft or robbery to report to Old Kampala Police Station with relevant ownership documents to facilitate verification and possible recovery of their property.
“We call upon members of the public who may have lost motorcycles to report to Old Kampala Police Station with the necessary ownership documents for verification and possible recovery,” Owoyesigyire said.
The operation marks one of the largest recoveries of suspected stolen motorcycles in recent months and forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle criminal networks involved in motorcycle theft, robbery and related offences across the Kampala Metropolitan area.
Police say investigations remain ongoing and additional details will be released as inquiries progress.
