KAMPALA — Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested 79 suspects during a series of intelligence-led operations targeting criminal gangs, drug abuse, robberies, house break-ins and other related offences across Kampala and Wakiso districts.

The joint operations, conducted on the nights of June 9 and 10, involved police officers, local leaders and community security stakeholders and focused on areas identified as crime hotspots.

According to police, the operations targeted locations known for harbouring criminal elements, particularly youths involved in narcotic drug abuse and criminal activities such as robbery, phone snatching, assault, house breaking and theft.

The affected areas included Biina A and Biina B in Butabika, Biwologoma, Old Taxi Park, Wilson Road, Nile Coach, City Square, Yesu Amala, Kyebando, Masitowa, Ganda, Bujjuko and Ngobe Cell.

Police said the operations yielded significant results, with 79 suspects arrested from various locations.

“Some of the suspects were found in possession of narcotic substances, including marijuana and opium, while others were found with suspected house-breaking implements,” police said in a statement.

Investigators also noted that some of those arrested are repeat offenders who have previously been linked to criminal activities within the metropolitan area.

The suspects have since been charged with various offences and are being held at different police stations pending further investigations and prosecution.

Police recovered several exhibits during the operations, including narcotic substances and suspected burglary tools, which have been secured as evidence.

Kampala Metropolitan Police commended members of the public for providing information that contributed to the success of the operations and urged residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities within their communities.

“Kampala Metropolitan Police remains committed to conducting sustained intelligence-led operations to deter criminal elements, enhance public safety and maintain law and order within the metropolitan area,” the statement said.

The operations form part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb urban crime and improve public safety across Kampala and the surrounding districts.

The statement was issued by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
