KAMPALA, May 25, 2026 — State Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, has been elected Speaker of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Delegates Conference after securing a commanding victory in a vote held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Official results released on Monday showed that Oboth garnered 441 votes from delegates, emerging the clear winner in a contest that attracted participation from party representatives drawn from across the country.
A total of 519 ballot papers were cast during the election. No delegates abstained, while three ballots were declared spoiled during the counting process, reflecting a high level of participation in the exercise.
The election was one of the key agenda items at the NRM National Delegates Conference, the party’s highest decision-making organ, which convenes to deliberate on policy matters, constitutional amendments, leadership issues and strategic direction ahead of major electoral cycles.
As Speaker of the conference, Oboth will preside over proceedings, maintain order during debates and guide delegates through resolutions and decisions arising from the gathering.
The position is considered critical to the smooth conduct of conference business, particularly at a time when the ruling party is preparing for upcoming political and electoral activities.
Delegates welcomed the outcome after the results were announced at Kololo, with Oboth’s overwhelming margin of victory seen as a demonstration of confidence in his leadership and experience within the party structures.
The National Delegates Conference brings together NRM leaders, Members of Parliament, district representatives, youth and women leaders, and other party delegates from across Uganda to deliberate on matters affecting both the party and the country.
