Kamuli, Uganda | July 18, 2026 — Several students were injured on Saturday after a coaster transporting learners from an educational trip collided with a sugarcane truck at Busota along the Jinja–Kamuli Road.
The students, who attend Nalango Secondary School, were returning from a study tour in Jinja when the crash occurred.
Emergency responders, health workers and residents rushed to the scene to rescue the injured before they were transported to Kamuli Main Hospital and Busota Health Centre III for medical treatment.
By Saturday evening, authorities had not confirmed the number of students injured or the extent of their injuries.
Police said investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances that led to the collision.
The latest accident comes amid heightened concern over the safety of school transport following a series of crashes involving learners.
On Friday, the government suspended all school study tours and educational excursions after a fatal crash in Kapchorwa District claimed the lives of more than 20 people.
The Kamuli crash has renewed concerns over road safety on the Jinja–Kamuli highway, a major transport corridor in the Busoga sub-region that is frequently used by heavy commercial vehicles, including sugarcane trucks.
Road safety experts have previously cautioned that the mix of heavy trucks and passenger vehicles on the route, coupled with speeding, dangerous overtaking and other traffic violations, increases the risk of serious crashes.
The incident also follows other recent accidents involving school transport, including a collision between a school bus and a train in Mukono District and another crash involving a school bus and a stationary trailer in Bugweri District.
Authorities are expected to establish whether the school vehicle complied with transport safety requirements and whether all regulations governing educational trips had been observed before the journey.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when sharing the road with heavy commercial vehicles, as investigations into the crash continue.
