Kampala, Uganda — The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has remanded the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Nwoya District, Janepher Nantume Egunyu, to Luzira Maximum Security Prison over allegations of abuse of office linked to an illegal animal market.
Nantume was arrested on Monday in Nwoya District following investigations by the Inspectorate of Government. She was arraigned on Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Peter Fred Lochomin at the Anti-Corruption Court.
According to the Inspectorate, the senior district official is accused of irregularly facilitating the establishment or operation of an unauthorised animal market, in a move that allegedly contravened established procedures and laws governing public administration.
Farouk Kayondo, deputy spokesperson of the Inspectorate of Government, confirmed the development, stating that Nantume would remain in custody pending further proceedings.
“She has been remanded until May 4, 2026,” Kayondo said.
Nantume was remanded alongside Fred Kalisa, a farmer from Got Okwara village in Lungulu sub-county, who is also implicated in the case.
Authorities have not yet disclosed full details of the alleged scheme, but the charges fall under abuse of office, a corruption-related offence that carries significant legal penalties if proven in court.
The case adds to a series of ongoing anti-corruption efforts targeting public officials across Uganda, as enforcement agencies intensify scrutiny on the management of public resources and local government operations.
The matter will return to court on May 4, when the accused are expected to reappear for further mention as investigations continue.
