KAMPALA — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has issued a call for expression of interest from party members seeking to contest as flagbearers in the upcoming East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) by-election.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Commission Chairperson, Tanga Odoi, during a press briefing in Kampala.

Vacant positions

The by-election is intended to fill vacancies left by Denis Namara and James Kakooza, who were elected to Uganda’s 12th Parliament in January.

EALA members represent Uganda at the East African Legislative Assembly, the legislative arm of the East African Community.

Application process

Dr. Odoi said interested candidates are required to submit a written expression of interest along with an updated curriculum vitae addressed to the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson.

“Interested members shall deliver a written Expression of Interest letter and updated CV to the Chairperson, NRM Electoral Commission at Plot 13, Kyadondo Road,” Odoi said.

The exercise will run from Monday, March 23 to Wednesday, March 25, 2026, closing at 5:00 p.m.

Nomination timeline

The Commission also announced that nomination of candidates will take place on Wednesday, March 25, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Party officials say the process is part of preparations for the April elections to select Uganda’s representatives to the regional assembly.

Broader electoral preparations

The call for expression of interest signals the start of internal party processes ahead of the by-election, as political parties position candidates for regional representation.

Successful NRM flagbearers will go on to contest in the EALA elections, where members are elected by Uganda’s Parliament to represent the country at the regional level.
