The Bikyingi gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has welcomed a new member after a female gorilla, Munyirio, gave birth to a baby, raising the family’s population from 10 to 11 individuals.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) announced the birth on Monday, August 3, 2026, describing it as a positive milestone for mountain gorilla conservation efforts.
“Good news from Rushaga, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park! The Bikyingi gorilla family has grown from 10 to 11 members, including two infants, after female Munyirio gave birth to a new baby,” UWA said.
The birth adds to ongoing conservation successes in Bwindi, home to a significant population of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
UWA said the arrival of the infant highlights the importance of continued protection of mountain gorillas and their habitats.
Mountain gorilla populations have historically faced threats from habitat loss, disease, and human activity, but conservation initiatives, including protected areas, veterinary support, community involvement, and responsible tourism, have contributed to their recovery.
The Bikyingi family is among the gorilla groups monitored in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, which is one of the areas where visitors can participate in regulated gorilla trekking experiences.
The new addition brings the family to two infants, offering further hope for the survival and growth of Uganda’s mountain gorilla population.
