Ugandan authorities have apprehended a municipal engineer from Namisindwa who allegedly fled to Kenya in an attempt to evade an ongoing corruption investigation.
The engineer was arrested after investigators tracked him across the border and has since been returned to Uganda to face the law.
Authorities are investigating allegations of financial impropriety involving public infrastructure projects, including suspected embezzlement and the mismanagement of government funds. The suspect is alleged to have fled the country after investigators uncovered irregularities linked to public expenditure.
The arrest comes amid intensified anti-corruption operations targeting public officials accused of abusing their offices and misusing taxpayers’ money.
Namisindwa District has previously been the subject of several corruption investigations involving engineers and technical officers. In 2022, District Engineer Robert Mulekule Tululukha was arrested and charged with embezzlement and causing financial loss after a ministerial inspection reportedly uncovered ghost projects, cracked buildings and poorly executed road works despite billions of shillings allocated to the district.
The latest arrest also follows recent anti-corruption operations targeting technical officials in local governments, including cases involving procurement irregularities, ghost workers and the alleged diversion of road maintenance funds.
Authorities say the suspect is expected to be arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court to answer charges related to the ongoing investigation.
The case underscores continued efforts by anti-corruption agencies to strengthen accountability in local governments, where allegations of abuse of office, inflated contracts and the misuse of public resources have continued to undermine service delivery.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further action may be taken should additional evidence emerge.
