KAMPALA, June 25, 2026 — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports following a vacancy in the leadership of the ministry.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was made under the powers vested in the President by Article 99(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda.

According to an official communication issued on Thursday, June 25, 2026, President Museveni designated Hon. Muyingo to oversee the Ministry of Education and Sports in the absence of a substantive minister.

“In exercise of the powers vested in the President under Article 99(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports in the absence of a substantive Minister,” the statement reads.

“The appointment takes immediate effect.”

Hon. Muyingo, who has extensive experience in Uganda’s education sector, previously served as State Minister for Higher Education and has been involved in several government initiatives aimed at improving access to and the quality of education.

His appointment comes at a critical time for the sector as government continues the implementation of key reforms, including the Competency-Based Curriculum, teacher professionalization initiatives, and efforts to improve learning outcomes across the country.

The Ministry of Education and Sports is currently overseeing a number of strategic programmes aimed at enhancing teaching and learning, expanding access to education, and equipping young people with skills required for the modern labour market.

Observers say Muyingo’s experience in education policy and administration positions him well to provide continuity and leadership at the ministry as government works to advance its education transformation agenda.
