Mucureezi Milfat of Ankole has been crowned Miss Tourism Uganda 2026, emerging as the overall winner at the grand finale held on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Milfat took the crown at a finale that brought together contestants from across Uganda in a celebration of tourism, culture, talent and national identity. The Uganda Tourism Board confirmed her victory in a post following the event.

She was joined at the top of Uganda’s tourism pageantry by Prosper Auther Makay, who was crowned Man of Tourism International King 2026.

Milfat’s victory came after she had already distinguished herself during the competition, including winning the Miss Talent title.

Her advocacy centres on equipping young Ugandans with artificial intelligence skills, while using technology to promote Uganda’s tourism, culture and natural heritage.

According to her contestant profile, Milfat, 20, is a student and the founder of the Junior Eco Organization Uganda. Her proposed advocacy is to equip young people with AI skills so they can develop home-grown applications and use digital platforms to showcase Uganda’s tourism and cultural resources.

That agenda places technology alongside tourism at the centre of her reign.

It is an increasingly relevant combination. Uganda has spent years trying to market the “Pearl of Africa” to the world, yet the way tourists discover destinations is changing rapidly. Search engines, social media, artificial intelligence and digital storytelling increasingly determine what people see before they ever board a plane.

The question for a tourism ambassador, therefore, is no longer simply how to wear the crown.

It is how to make Uganda visible.

A national competition

Miss Tourism Uganda’s official website lists Milfat among the finalists selected for the 2026 competition, alongside contestants representing different parts of the country.

The competition includes categories linked to tourism and national development, including conservation, heritage, agro-tourism, environment, wellness and multimedia.

Several contestants were recognised at the grand finale. Kajumba Gorret Abwooli was named Sports Queen and first runner-up, while Bongonyinge Harriet was named second runner-up. Other titles included Miss Agro Tourism, Miss Conservation, Miss Environment, Miss Heritage, Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic and UWA Ambassador.

The diversity of the categories reflects an attempt to make the pageant about more than physical appearance.

A tourism crown is, after all, a strange object if it cannot carry a country’s story.

Uganda’s tourism industry depends heavily on its landscapes, wildlife, cultures and people. The country’s official tourism campaign markets destinations ranging from national parks and mountain gorillas to cultural sites and communities.

Miss Tourism Uganda has positioned its ambassadors within that wider promotional effort, with the organisation listing conservation awareness, cultural festivals, food tourism, road safety and sanitation among its community projects.

Milfat’s technology agenda

Milfat’s proposed focus on artificial intelligence gives her reign a distinctly contemporary dimension.

Through Junior Eco Organisation Uganda, she says she wants young Ugandans to acquire skills that can help them create locally developed digital products while promoting the country’s tourism and cultural resources.

The idea raises a larger question for Uganda’s tourism industry: can technology turn young Ugandans from consumers of other people’s digital stories into producers of their own?

A young person in Ankole, Karamoja, Buganda or Acholi does not need to wait for a foreign documentary crew to arrive before telling the story of their landscape.

A smartphone can become a camera. AI can become a production assistant. Social media can become the distribution network.

But the technology is only a tool. The harder question is whether Uganda can produce stories compelling enough to make the world stop scrolling.

That is the challenge now facing Milfat as she begins her reign.

She inherits a crown designed to promote tourism. She has chosen to add another ambition to it: using technology to help Ugandans tell their own story.
