Kikuube, Uganda — The Electoral Commission of Uganda has officially announced June 10, 2026, as the polling date for the Kikuube District LC V chairperson by-election, kicking off a structured roadmap to fill the vacant leadership position.

The seat fell vacant following the death of former district chairperson Peter Banura, who recently died in a road accident, leaving a leadership gap in the western Uganda district.

Addressing the media, Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama confirmed that the electoral process will begin with a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on April 27 to harmonise all candidates and political actors on the guidelines governing the by-election.

“The process will start with a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at ensuring all participants are aligned on the electoral roadmap and regulations,” Byabakama said.

The Commission will then conduct a voter register update exercise from April 28 to April 30, followed by a public display of the updated register between May 8 and May 12 to allow residents to verify and correct their details.

Nomination of candidates is scheduled for May 25 and May 26, after which official campaign activities will run from May 28 to June 8.

“Campaigns will be conducted within the stipulated period, and we call upon all aspirants to adhere to the law and maintain peace throughout the process,” the Commission noted.

Polling will take place on June 10, with the Electoral Commission assuring the public of adequate logistical preparation, including trained polling officials and coordination with security agencies to ensure a peaceful election.

The vacancy follows the passing of Peter Banura, who had recently been re-elected as district chairperson. His death prompted the legal requirement for a by-election to be conducted within the prescribed timeframe.

Banura was widely known in Kikuube District for his role in local governance and development initiatives.

The Electoral Commission has urged residents, political leaders, and stakeholders to participate peacefully and uphold electoral laws as the district prepares to elect a new LC V chairperson.
