Lusaka, Zambia — Kiira Motors’ groundbreaking African Electric Expedition has continued to generate excitement across Zambia, with the Ugandan-made electric coach surpassing the 3,000-kilometre mark as it heads toward Lusaka.
Now on Day 9, the expedition team received a visit from Dr Saul Kiwempindi, CEO of Wonderful Group Zambia, who lauded the mission’s innovation and ambition. The team later held engagements with officials at MTN Zambia, discussing the digital infrastructure crucial to supporting Africa’s emerging electric mobility ecosystem.
The expedition—whose mantra, “one team, one goal; one goal, one team; together we roll,” has become a rallying call—is demonstrating the feasibility of long-distance travel across Africa using electric vehicles.
Zambia Lights Up as the Coach Moves South
Since entering Zambia through Nakonde, the electric coach has passed through Mpika and is now on course for Lusaka, drawing crowds and attention along the way. Kiira Motors says the country’s natural beauty is unfolding “with every stretch of road,” as the expedition continues to showcase sustainable mobility across borders.
The team recently celebrated a major milestone after clocking 3,000 km, with about 10,000 km still ahead in the continental journey.
Building Africa’s EV Future
Eng. Fred Matovu, one of the technical leads, said the expedition has now logged 2,370 km powered entirely by available charging infrastructure within the region—an achievement he described as both a challenge and an opportunity.
He highlighted the need for strengthened charging networks, cross-border energy cooperation, and policy support to unlock Africa’s full electric vehicle potential.
Meanwhile, Mission Commander Elias Bwambale shared optimism about the next leg of the trip, noting that the record-setting journey is not only testing the capabilities of Kiira’s electric coach but also inspiring a new vision for sustainable transport on the continent.
The African Electric Expedition aims to cover 13,000 km across multiple countries, making it the longest electric vehicle road test ever undertaken in Africa.
