Kampala Capital City Authority has issued nuisance orders to bars, nightclubs and entertainment venues across Kampala, directing them to install noise limiters and soundproof their premises within 14 days or face enforcement action.
The directive was announced by KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki as city authorities intensify efforts to tackle noise pollution in the capital.
According to Buzeki, KCCA has already served notices to several establishments accused of exceeding permissible noise levels, particularly in mixed residential and commercial areas where complaints from residents have been increasing.
She said the affected businesses have been granted a two-week grace period to insulate their premises, install noise control equipment and comply with environmental regulations before enforcement begins.
Buzeki warned that businesses that fail to comply after the deadline expires will face action in accordance with existing laws governing environmental protection and public nuisance.
KCCA said it is working together with the National Environment Management Authority to enforce noise standards provided for under the National Environment (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2003.
Under the regulations, noise levels in commercial areas should not exceed 75 decibels during daytime hours and 50 decibels at night. In residential areas, lower limits apply.
The latest crackdown is expected to affect bars, clubs, entertainment spots and other venues operating in densely populated areas of Kampala.
City authorities say the move is intended to improve public health, restore order and enhance the quality of life for residents affected by excessive noise.
KCCA has previously carried out similar enforcement operations, including confiscating sound equipment from non-compliant bars and threatening closure of establishments that repeatedly violate noise regulations.
In earlier engagements with entertainment business owners, KCCA officials emphasised the need for operators to adopt soundproofing measures and use noise monitoring devices to ensure compliance with the law.
