Police in Kanungu District are investigating the death of a 53-year-old man from Kanyantorogo Sub-county, amid reports that financial difficulties and accumulated debts may have contributed to his death.

The deceased has been identified as Fredian Friday, a resident of Kahama Cell, Kanyantorogo Sub-county.

According to the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, police received a report concerning the incident on August 6, 2026, and a team of detectives and scene of crime officers responded.

SP Tumushime said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police extended condolences to the family, friends and the wider community of Kanyantorogo Sub-county during what they described as a difficult period.

Authorities also urged members of the public experiencing emotional distress or financial challenges to seek support from trusted people, health professionals, counsellors or religious leaders.

“We encourage anyone going through emotional stress to seek help and support rather than making decisions that may put their lives at risk,” police said.

Police further cautioned the public against speculation and appealed for respect for the privacy of the bereaved family as investigations continue.
