Karuma, Uganda — A fuel tanker has plunged into the River Nile near Karuma Bridge, prompting an ongoing search and recovery operation by police and marine teams.

According to authorities, the tanker was travelling along the Kampala–Gulu highway when it lost control at around 2:50am and veered off the road into the river.

Police said the vehicle was later spotted floating several kilometres downstream but became lodged between rocks, complicating recovery efforts. Specialized marine equipment has been deployed to retrieve the wreckage.

Officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the driver or whether there were other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The incident has renewed safety concerns along the Kampala–Gulu highway, a major transport corridor known for sharp bends and frequent accidents, particularly near Karuma.
