DR Congo fan stirs hearts at AFCON with viral statue pose

Casablanca, Morocco  — A devoted DR Congo supporter has captured hearts at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco with a remarkable display of dedication and patriotism.

Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly nicknamed “Lumumba” or “Lumumba Vea”, has stood completely motionless for the entire duration of every Leopards match, paying tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first Prime Minister and anti-colonial hero, assassinated in 1961.

Mboladinga mimics the iconic pose of Lumumba’s famous statue: standing tall with one arm raised.

He appears sharply dressed in suits, often in colours reflecting the Congolese flag, and occupies a makeshift podium in the stands. He remains perfectly still—even during matches extended into extra time exceeding 115 minutes—creating a striking, silent homage to national pride and history.

His unwavering dedication has turned him into a celebrity in Morocco. Fans flock to him for selfies, fellow supporters escort and protect him as he moves through stadiums, and his viral videos have spread across social media and international news outlets.

DR Congo, having advanced from the group stage, faced Algeria in the round of 16, where Mboladinga continued his ritual, undeterred by the intensity of the game.

Observers have described the tribute as a powerful blend of football fandom and national remembrance, a symbol of how sports can celebrate history and identity.

“This is classic AFCON magic—where the passion in the stands often rivals the action on the pitch,” one commentator noted, capturing the spirit of the tournament.

Mboladinga’s silent vigil has resonated globally, highlighting the enduring legacy of Patrice Lumumba while adding a human, heartwarming story to Africa’s premier football competition.
