GLASGOW, Scotland — Uganda’s Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai produced another podium finish on the international stage, winning the bronze medal in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Chemutai crossed the finish line in 9:09.96 to secure third place behind Kenya’s Faith Cherotich, who claimed gold in a Commonwealth Games record time of 9:01.76, while England’s Elise Thorner took silver in 9:05.45.
The bronze medal adds to Uganda’s growing tally at the Games and marks Chemutai’s second consecutive Commonwealth Games bronze in the event after also finishing third at the Birmingham 2022 Games.

The race featured a strong field, with Chemutai setting the early pace before Kenya’s reigning world champion Faith Cherotich surged clear in the closing stages to break the Commonwealth Games record. Thorner produced a personal-best performance to secure silver, while Chemutai held on for bronze after a determined final lap.
The medal further cements Chemutai’s reputation as one of Uganda’s greatest female athletes. The 27-year-old made history by becoming the first Ugandan woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she captured the 3,000m steeplechase title at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 before adding Olympic silver in Paris in 2024. She also holds the Ugandan national record in the event.
Chemutai was among the 17 athletes selected by Uganda Athletics to represent the country at the Glasgow Games, with the federation expressing confidence that the team would continue Uganda’s strong tradition in middle- and long-distance running.
Her latest podium finish continues Uganda’s impressive record in international athletics and provides another boost to the country’s medal campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
