A group of National Unity Platform (NUP) polling agents arrested during the January 15, 2026, elections has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nakawa.

The agents were reportedly detained on election day after being removed from several polling stations where they were deployed to monitor the voting process on behalf of their party. According to their legal team, the arrests occurred while the agents were lawfully carrying out their duties.

During a court appearance held on Monday, defence lawyers argued that the polling agents had been unjustly detained and posed no threat to the ongoing legal process. The magistrate granted them bail, allowing their temporary release while investigations and legal proceedings continue.

Lawyers representing the group welcomed the court’s decision, affirming their commitment to protecting the rights of polling agents and election participants.

The matter is expected to return to court at a later date as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
