KAMPALA — Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the public to disregard a widely circulated online notice claiming that the Government of Cambodia had ordered all African nationals to leave the Southeast Asian country by May 31, 2026.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said it had received formal communication from the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia confirming that the purported immigration notice was fake.
“Please disregard an ‘official notice’ circulated online purportedly by the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, giving all Africans an ultimatum to leave Cambodia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a public advisory.
According to the Ministry, Cambodian authorities formally notified Uganda that no such directive had been issued and that the document circulating on social media and various online platforms was fraudulent.
“The Government of Uganda has received formal notice from the Government of Cambodia that the notice of forced exit by May 31, 2026 is fake,” the statement added.
The clarification follows a statement issued by Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior, which categorically dismissed reports alleging that African nationals with expired immigration waivers had been ordered to leave the country.
In its official clarification released from Phnom Penh, the immigration authority described the reports as false and urged the public to rely only on verified government communication channels for immigration-related information.
“The General Department of Immigration of the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia wishes to clarify that the information published on those websites is completely untrue,” the Cambodian authorities stated.
The disputed reports had appeared on several online platforms and claimed that Cambodia had set a May 31 deadline for African nationals to depart the country. The reports quickly gained traction on social media, causing concern among African communities living and working in Cambodia.
Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that all official immigration announcements from Cambodia can be verified through the country’s immigration authorities and encouraged Ugandans abroad to seek information from official sources before acting on viral messages.
Officials noted that authentic immigration notices and updates are published through Cambodia’s official immigration channels and not through unofficial social media posts or unverified websites.
The clarification is expected to reassure Ugandan and other African nationals residing in Cambodia, many of whom had expressed concern over the alleged deportation order.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further urged members of the public to exercise caution when sharing immigration-related information online and to verify claims through official government channels to avoid spreading misinformation.
