Ugandan boxer Aziz Abdul, popularly known as “Ringo” and a grandson of former Ugandan President Idi Amin, has been disqualified from the 2026 African Boxing Championships in Nairobi after throwing an illegal punch against Egypt’s Mohamed Hossen in the men’s 90kg final.
The disqualification cost Abdul the silver medal he had initially secured in the final, according to the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF).
In a statement shared on its Facebook page, the federation announced that Abdul had earned silver before being disqualified for the illegal blow against Hossen.
“It’s a Silver for Aziz Abdul Ringo after a Disqualification for illegal blow against Mohamed Hossen of Egypt in the 90kgs Finals of the 2026 African Boxing Championship,” the federation said.
The incident denied Uganda the silver medal in the final, although the federation’s statement did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the punch or the officials’ decision.
Abdul’s disqualification highlights the strict rules governing competitive boxing, where illegal blows can result in penalties or disqualification, depending on the nature and circumstances of the infringement.
The 2026 African Boxing Championships are being held in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together boxers from across the continent to compete for continental honours.
Abdul is known beyond the boxing ring because of his family background. He is a grandson of Idi Amin, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979.
The Uganda Boxing Federation has not indicated whether it intends to challenge the decision or whether further disciplinary action will follow.
