Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa underlined her dominance in women’s marathon running by defending her title at the London Marathon while setting a new women’s-only world record.

Assefa crossed the finish line in 2:15:41, improving on her previous mark and pulling away decisively from her rivals in the closing stages.

Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir finished second after a strong but ultimately distant chase, while compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei secured third place to complete the podium.

The victory further cements Assefa’s status as one of the most formidable marathon runners in the world, as she continues to push the boundaries of women’s distance running.
