Ugandan blogger Ashburg Katto has made an emotional public appeal for forgiveness from opposition leader Bobi Wine, years after abandoning the People Power movement and joining the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
In videos shared on TikTok, Katto is seen kneeling and wearing a red beret as he expresses regret over his decision to leave the opposition movement and asks former colleagues and supporters to judge him by his future actions.
Katto said he regretted leaving at a time when the movement needed him and acknowledged the fallout from his decision.
His latest appeal revives a political break that attracted considerable attention in 2020, when Katto, then a prominent supporter and mobiliser of Bobi Wine, announced that he had joined the NRM.
Katto had been closely associated with Wine and founded Ghetto TV, an online platform that amplified the musician-turned-politician’s political activities. In May 2020, he publicly announced his departure from People Power and said he had embraced the NRM.
At the time, Wine publicly addressed the defection, warning supporters against internal divisions and saying that members should be judged by their actions rather than accusations of being spies.
Katto later returned to the subject in 2023, saying he regretted the decision and wanted to return to what he called his “roots.” He apologised to former colleagues and supporters, including Bobi Wine, saying he had lost friends and family as a result of his political choices.
In his latest videos, Katto again appeals for forgiveness while acknowledging that some people may remain sceptical about his change of position.
The appeal has prompted mixed reactions online, with some users calling for caution and saying Katto should be judged by his conduct over time, while others have questioned whether his apology should be accepted.
Katto’s latest appeal comes as Bobi Wine remains a central figure in Uganda’s opposition politics. The National Unity Platform leader has remained outside Uganda since March 2026 following the January presidential election and has continued political activities from abroad.
There has been no publicly confirmed response from Bobi Wine to Katto’s latest TikTok appeal.
