The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has officially launched the long-awaited upgrade of the 9.1-kilometre Mpererwe–Kiteezi–Kiti Road, a key infrastructure project expected to ease transport challenges in Kawempe Division and parts of Wakiso District.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Kiteezi on Wednesday, marking the start of works under the African Development Bank-funded Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project.
In a statement shared on X, KCCA announced the commencement of the project, expressing optimism about its impact on the surrounding communities.
“HAPPENING NOW: We are breaking ground today in Kiteezi. Mpererwe–Kiteezi–Kiti Road will never be the same again,” the Authority posted.
The works will be executed by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), covering 4.1 kilometres of road paving and 5 kilometres of full reconstruction. The project is expected to run for 18 months.
According to KCCA, the upgraded road will feature widened carriageways, improved drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, street lighting, and landscaping. Officials say these improvements are aimed at reducing traffic congestion and addressing persistent flooding in the area.
Speaking at the launch, Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Nkunyingi Muwada urged the contractor to adhere strictly to project timelines and community expectations.
“We expect forward maintenance of the road, creation of alternative routes before closure of any section, adherence to the 18 months timeline, and employment of local people,” Muwada said.
He noted that the road project had faced delays for over three years despite earlier budget approvals.
“This road has delayed for three years since we pushed for budget appropriation for its construction. Works commence today,” he added.
KCCA emphasized that the project will also create employment opportunities for local residents, both in skilled and unskilled roles.
The Authority has called on communities along the project corridor to cooperate with contractors by safeguarding construction sites and reporting any concerns during the implementation period.
Once completed, the Mpererwe–Kiteezi–Kiti Road is expected to significantly improve mobility, boost local economic activity, and enhance living conditions in the affected areas.
