KAMPALA — Joint security teams comprising police and the military on Monday carried out a major operation in downtown Kampala, targeting buildings long suspected to be hubs for stolen mobile phones.

The operation focused on City House, Kalungi Plaza, and Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza, where security personnel sealed off entrances and exits as searches were conducted.

Eyewitnesses reported a heavy deployment, with no one allowed to enter or leave the premises during the operation.

“Security personnel have sealed off the premises, with no one allowed to enter or leave as operations continue inside,” eyewitness accounts indicated.

Several suspects were arrested during the crackdown, with some seen in handcuffs as they were escorted from the buildings. Videos circulating online showed tense scenes, including individuals attempting to resist arrest.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed official statement on the number of arrests or items recovered, but preliminary reports indicate the operation was aimed at dismantling networks dealing in stolen mobile phones.

The targeted buildings have previously been linked to the trade in stolen devices, with past operations yielding hundreds of recovered phones. The latest crackdown follows a surge in street phone snatching incidents across Kampala.

Residents and victims of phone theft welcomed the move, expressing hope that it would disrupt the black market for stolen electronics.

Security officials say the ongoing operation is part of broader efforts to curb urban crime by cutting off resale channels for stolen property.

The raids continued into the evening at some locations as investigators conducted thorough searches, with more details expected once authorities conclude the operation.
