KAMPALA — Court proceedings in the high-profile Ggaba murder trial intensified as prosecution witnesses presented new evidence linking suspect Christopher Okello Onyum to the crime scene, including CCTV footage, recovered weapons, and personal items.
Two American passports belonging to Okello were formally presented in court as exhibits, alongside six additional knives recovered from his residence in Kyanja during a police search.
Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police James Eserait, attached to Kabalagala Police Station, testified that he led the search operation at the suspect’s home.
“The knives were discovered during a search conducted at the suspect’s residence as part of ongoing investigations,” Eserait told the court.
Eserait further testified that he was the first officer to arrive at the crime scene, where he found the accused.
“During our initial interaction, the suspect allegedly confessed and said he had been driven by a desire for wealth and had spent a considerable amount of time planning the act,” he said.
According to Eserait, Okello also disclosed that he had purchased several knives, some of which he allegedly used in committing the offence.
“He later expressed remorse for his actions and stated that he personally contacted police through the emergency hotline 112 after the incident,” Eserait added.
The court also heard that glasses suspected of belonging to the accused were recovered from the crime scene.
Another prosecution witness, Detective Assistant Inspector of Police Jim Mutaka, presented the Crime Scene Examination Report linked to the case registered at Ggaba Police Station.
Mutaka told court he has worked as a scene of crime officer for four years and authored the report, although he admitted under cross-examination that he omitted the date of writing it. Despite the omission, the court admitted the report as evidence.
Digital evidence also featured prominently in the proceedings. Assistant Inspector of Police Emmanuel Odong from the Directorate of ICT presented CCTV footage tracking the movements of the suspect.
“CCTV cameras captured the vehicle allegedly used by the suspect at multiple locations, including Nakawa, New Vision Junction, Kisugu, Namuwongo, and Shell Jinja Road,” Odong testified.
He further told court that at 10:48 AM on April 1, 2026, a camera at New Vision Junction recorded the same vehicle heading towards Kampala city centre.
The court also viewed footage showing the suspect at different stages of movement, with Okello briefly moved from the dock to observe the video evidence as it was played.
Prosecution alleges that the suspect is responsible for the killing of four toddlers at a daycare centre in Ggaba, in a case that has shocked the nation.
The hearing continues as the prosecution builds its case through witness testimony, forensic evidence, and digital surveillance records.
