KAMPALA – A 44-year-old police officer has died following a fatal motorcycle crash in Kampala, with investigators pointing to a possible mechanical malfunction as the cause of the accident.

The incident occurred on April 19, 2026, when the officer, who was riding alone, reportedly lost control of his motorcycle before crashing. Authorities say early findings suggest that a failure involving the motorcycle’s kickstand may have contributed to the accident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the kickstand may not have been fully retracted, potentially striking the road surface during movement and destabilising the motorcycle.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the bike wobble suddenly before the rider was thrown off. The officer sustained severe injuries and was later pronounced dead.

The Uganda Police Force confirmed that no other vehicle was involved, with initial assessments pointing to either mechanical failure or rider-related error as the likely cause.

A formal investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

Road safety experts note that motorcycle accidents often result from a combination of mechanical issues and human error, stressing the importance of routine checks before riding. They caution that even small oversights—such as an improperly secured kickstand—can cause loss of balance at speed.

The incident has renewed concern over road safety among motorcycle users, particularly emergency and security personnel who rely heavily on motorcycles for rapid response duties.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased officer, pending notification of his next of kin.

Investigations are ongoing.
