The Uganda Wildlife Authority has handed over 35 bags of posho to the Batwa community living around Semliki National Park as part of ongoing community support initiatives.
The donation follows an offertory collected during a prayer session held at the Uganda Wildlife Authority Community Conservation annual conference, which took place on April 9 at New Fort View Hotel in Fort Portal. The session was led by Senior Sociologist Katana Dickson, who also serves as a pastor, and raised a total of UGX 400,000.
According to UWA, the food relief—comprising 35 bags of posho, each weighing 5 kilograms—was channelled to support vulnerable households in Batwa communities living near the conservation area.
The Batwa cultural leader, Geoffrey Nzito, expressed appreciation to UWA for the gesture, thanking the authority for its continued engagement with indigenous communities surrounding protected areas.
The donation forms part of UWA’s broader community conservation and livelihood support programmes aimed at strengthening relationships with communities adjacent to national parks while promoting conservation efforts.
Officials noted that such interventions are intended to complement ongoing initiatives that support alternative livelihoods and food security among historically marginalised communities living near protected ecosystems.
