WAKISO — Police in Kajjansi Division have opened investigations into the death of a one-year-old girl in Nakawuka, Wakiso District, in a case being treated as suspected poisoning.

The child, identified as Balisala Promise, died on Friday night in Katwe Cell, Nakawuka Parish, Kajjansi Town Council.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the child’s mother had reportedly been leaving her in the care of a relative—her nephew—while she attended night duty over the past two days.

Preliminary information indicates that the suspect allegedly gave the child an excessive amount of medicine in an attempt to make her sleep, claiming the baby had been restless during the night. The child’s condition later worsened, leading to her death.

Police have since registered a case of murder by poisoning and commenced inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, including forensic examinations and witness statements, before any formal charges can be determined.
