Man arrested for bag snatching, impersonation of police officer

Kampala, Uganda — Police in Kampala have arrested a 38-year-old man accused of robbing a teenage girl and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The suspect, identified as Kuteeka Hassan, a resident of Musibula Zone in Rubaga Division, was found in possession of a police identification card bearing his name and the insignia of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the arrest was triggered by a tip-off from a 17-year-old victim who recognised the suspect’s vehicle—a Toyota Golf (registration UAQ 950P)—previously linked to a bag-snatching incident near Nateete traffic lights in January 2026.

Police responded to the report at about 4 p.m. on Wednesday and tracked down the suspect. A search conducted at the time of arrest uncovered the suspected fake police ID, raising concerns that the suspect had been posing as a police officer.

“A case of personation has been registered, and investigations are ongoing,” Kawala said.

Authorities have cautioned the public to remain vigilant and report individuals who falsely present themselves as security personnel, warning that such impersonation poses a serious threat to public safety.
