Kampala, April 8, 2026 — Christopher Okello Onyum, the prime suspect in the killing of four children at a daycare centre in Ggaba, has been formally charged with four counts of murder.
The court committed Christopher Okello Onyum to the High Court for further trial over the alleged murder of four children at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre.
The charges were sanctioned by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which confirmed that Okello Onyum is accused of killing four minors at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre on April 2, 2026.
According to the charge sheet presented in court, the suspect “with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death” of the four victims—identified as Eteku Gideon, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Sseruyange Ignitius, and Odeke Ryan.
Okello Onyum appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him. The case is being prosecuted by Chief State Attorneys Jonathan Muwaganya and Anna Kiiza before Senior Magistrate Grade I Nanjala Aidah.
Court officials ordered that the suspect be remanded to Luzira Prison, with the case scheduled for mention.
The incident, which occurred at a daycare facility in Ggaba, Makindye Division, has shocked the community and sparked widespread concern over child safety.
Meanwhile, additional details emerging from family members suggest the suspect may have had a history of mental illness. It is alleged that he previously received treatment abroad before returning to Uganda.
Other claims circulating, including alleged past violent behaviour and possible influence from traditional beliefs, have not been officially confirmed by authorities.
Police and prosecutors have emphasised that investigations are ongoing, with officials working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killings.
The case has drawn national attention, with grieving families demanding justice as the judicial process begins.
Authorities say the prosecution will now proceed to present evidence in court as part of efforts to secure accountability in one of the most disturbing child-related crimes in recent years.
