Suspected number plate thief arrested in Katwe

KAMPALA — Police in Katwe have arrested a suspect linked to the theft of vehicle number plates as part of an ongoing crackdown on the crime in the city’s suburbs.

The suspect, identified as Katushabe Saul, a 26-year-old resident of Lweza in Kajjansi Town Council, Wakiso District, is believed to have been operating across several areas including Lweza, Najjanankumbi, Zana, Katale, and Nfufu.

According to police, the arrest followed a tip-off on March 28, 2026, about a suspicious individual reportedly trespassing in residential areas of Najjanankumbi. He was seen peeping into gated homes, prompting private security guards to alert authorities.

Police officers responded swiftly and apprehended the suspect, who later led them to the recovery of eight stolen vehicle number plates.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigations.

“In a continued crackdown on the theft of vehicle number plates, Police at Katwe are holding one suspect in connection with the offence,” she said. “Upon his arrest, the suspect led officers to the recovery of eight stolen number plates. Preliminary investigations indicate that he is a habitual offender.”

The suspect remains in custody at Katwe Police Station as investigations continue.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, noting that number plate theft has been linked to other criminal activities, including robbery and vehicle-related fraud.
