Juba, South Sudan — Brigadier General Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit is emerging as a key figure in South Sudan’s security architecture, serving as the commander of the Special Forces Unit within the national security sector.

Local reports and social media profiles identify him as the leader of the unit tasked with safeguarding the country’s top leadership and boosting elite security operations.

Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit — also referred to in some sources by the name Manut — is widely reported online and on social platforms as the son of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the longtime President of South Sudan who has led the country since its independence in 2011.

President Kiir himself is a former rebel commander and the head of state who steered South Sudan to independence from Sudan in 2011.

While there is limited formal international media coverage on Brig. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit in major global news outlets, social media and local reporting highlight his role as a rising security official responsible for shielding government leadership and reinforcing elite forces in a nation still grappling with political volatility and internal violence.

Observers note that the prominence of the president’s family members in key roles has drawn attention amid ongoing debates about governance, national security, and reform in South Sudan. However, detailed independent verification from major international sources on Brig. Gen. Atem’s biography and official duties remains limited.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s leadership has been marked by efforts to stabilise peace following the country’s brutal civil war, but South Sudan continues to face security challenges, with rival factions and rebel movements periodically clashing with government forces.
