3 netted with suspected stolen cattle meat

Police in Kampala have arrested three suspects found in possession of suspected stolen cattle meat during an early morning operation in Nakulabye.

According to a statement issued by Racheal Kawala, the Uganda Police Force Flying Squad Unit intercepted a vehicle transporting the suspected stolen property in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police said that at around 2:00am on March 11, officers received intelligence about a white Toyota Wish suspected to be carrying stolen goods. The officers trailed the vehicle to Nakulabye in Kampala where it parked and the occupants began offloading slaughtered cows.

“The officers swiftly moved in and arrested three suspects who are currently in police custody,” Kawala said in the statement.

The vehicle, registration number UBG 345D, was recovered at the scene with two slaughtered cows found in its boot.

The suspects have been identified as Saka Kisiga Salongo, Guloba Hamza — a butcher — and Bukenya John, who police say was the driver of the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the animals were allegedly stolen from the Zirobwe and Luweero areas before being transported to Kampala.

Police said the suspects are believed to have been selling the meat in Nakulabye, where it was reportedly distributed in kilogramme portions at about Shs10,000 per kilogramme.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the suspected cattle theft and identify any other individuals involved in the operation.
