Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has shared a surprising and personal side of his life off the pitch — expressing regret that he didn’t focus more on formal education as a child, especially learning English.
Speaking on the Mexican podcast Miro de Atras, Messi — widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time — spoke candidly about lessons he wishes he had learned earlier in life. The 38-year-old said his early focus on football meant he didn’t take full advantage of the educational opportunities he had growing up.
“I regret many things. Not having learned English as a boy. I had the time to have at least studied English and I didn’t do it. I deeply regret it,” Messi said, recalling how the language barrier made him feel “half ignorant” when interacting with high-profile figures during his career.
Messi has become a global icon through his decades-long career with clubs like FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and now Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer. But despite speaking Spanish and having picked up bits of other languages, he says the inability to communicate fluently in English has sometimes left him feeling uncomfortable.
Beyond language, Messi also said he now emphasises the value of education and preparation to his own children, urging them to make the most of their schooling. “Today that’s what I tell my children — the importance of good education, to study and be prepared,” he told the podcast.
