UCU renames Bishop Tucker Library after Bishop Bukenya

MUKONO, Uganda — Uganda Christian University (UCU) has officially renamed its former Bishop Tucker Library in honour of its first University Secretary, Dunstan Bukenya, recognising his foundational role in shaping the institution.

In a statement shared on its official platforms, the university said the decision celebrates Bishop Bukenya’s vision and dedicated service during UCU’s formative years following its opening in 1997.

University leaders noted that Bishop Bukenya played a central role in establishing governance structures and laying administrative foundations that have supported UCU’s growth into one of Uganda’s leading private universities.

He is also credited with spearheading the establishment of the UCU School of Law in 1998, which has since grown into one of the institution’s flagship faculties, producing graduates who serve in Uganda’s judiciary, legal practice, public service, and private sector.

The renaming of the library — a central academic hub at the Mukono-based university — is intended to preserve Bishop Bukenya’s legacy and inspire current and future generations of students and staff.

Founded by the Church of Uganda, UCU has expanded significantly since its inception, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple campuses. The renaming ceremony marks another milestone in commemorating individuals whose leadership contributed to the university’s development and mission of holistic Christian education.
