Wakiso District — A serval cat has been successfully rescued from a fish pond in Seeta Village, Busukuma Division, following a swift response by the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Problem Animal Capture Unit.
The wild cat reportedly fell into a pond owned by Mr Bazira Henry, prompting residents to alert authorities. A UWA team led by Sgt. Oswald Tumanya quickly arrived at the scene and carefully retrieved the animal alive, ensuring minimal distress during the operation.
After the rescue, the serval was transferred to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) for veterinary examination and monitoring. Officials indicated that once cleared by veterinarians, the animal will be released back into its natural habitat.
A serval is a medium-sized wild cat known for its long legs, large ears, and sharp hunting skills. Typically found in savannahs and wetlands, servals play an important ecological role by controlling rodent populations. Although generally shy and elusive, they may occasionally wander near human settlements in search of food or water.
Residents in the area praised UWA for its prompt and professional response, noting that the intervention protected both the animal and the community. Authorities say such rescues highlight the importance of human-wildlife coexistence and reaffirm UWA’s commitment to safeguarding Uganda’s wildlife heritage.
