Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president Jimmy Akena has publicly criticised Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), over a series of social media posts he described as inappropriate and unbecoming of someone in such a high office.
Speaking at a press conference in Kampala on Wednesday, Akena took aim at Gen. Muhoozi’s recent online statements, saying they undermine democratic values and raise serious concerns about the conduct expected from senior military leadership.
Akena said that as CDF and the son of President Yoweri Museveni, Gen. Muhoozi bears a greater responsibility to exercise restraint in both his words and actions, especially on public platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).
“The sort of statements coming out of the office of the CDF is an embarrassment to all of us as Ugandans,” Akena said, urging the army chief to “grow up” and adopt more responsible communication.
The UPC leader singled out what he described as threats against opposition figures and controversial remarks that appear to clash with the nation’s democratic principles. Akena also questioned how a senior government official could publicly speak about harming individuals who participated in the recent presidential election and attracted widespread public support.
Akena’s critique reflects growing national debate over the appropriateness of Gen. Muhoozi’s social media activity and its potential impact on Uganda’s political climate, especially in the wake of the 2026 general elections and related tensions.
Gen. Muhoozi, a high-ranking army officer and influential public figure, has faced scrutiny previously for controversial posts that some critics say blur the lines between military duties and political commentary. Akena’s comments add to those voices calling for clearer boundaries and more measured conduct from holders of high public office.
As of now, Gen. Muhoozi has not publicly responded to Akena’s latest remarks.
