Mafabi decries poverty, loan sharks

As Uganda counts down to the presidential and parliamentary elections, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi says poverty and the growing influence of money lenders remain the biggest struggles facing ordinary Ugandans.

Speaking on NTV’s “Morning At NTV”, Mafabi said communities across the country shared similar concerns during his nationwide campaign tours.

“The main struggles people have shared with me are poverty and money lenders. Moneylenders are exploiting our people, even in the villages. It’s too painful for our people,” Mafabi said.

With just two days left to polling day, the opposition candidate said his campaign deliberately focused on grassroots engagement rather than large rallies, allowing him to directly interact with voters in rural communities.

“We made a deliberate decision to meet people where they are, so we went to the villages, and I am confident that I have reached 70 percent of the villages in this country,” he noted.

Mafabi, who brings more than two decades of parliamentary experience and a background in public finance, said he believes he has sufficiently presented the FDC manifesto to voters across the country.

“I feel that I have done my part, and I have taken our manifesto to every corner of the country so that people know what is supposed to be done. I have done my best,” he said.

The FDC manifesto campaign has in recent days traversed parts of eastern Uganda, including Sironko District, where Mafabi rallied residents to demand accountability, improved service delivery, and inclusive development.

As campaigns draw to a close, Mafabi maintained that his message resonates with ordinary Ugandans struggling with the high cost of living, limited access to affordable credit, and what he described as weak oversight in public service delivery.

Ugandans head to the polls in two days to elect a president and members of parliament, amid calls for a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process.
