BUL FC sacks coach Abbey Kikomeko

Jinja – BUL Football Club has announced the immediate termination of head coach Abbey Bogere Kikomeko following a poor run of form that has seen the Jinja-based Uganda Premier League side fall to 12th place.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CEO Joseph Mutaka cited a failure to meet technical standards as the main reason for the decision.

“BUL Football Club wishes to inform its supporters, stakeholders, and the general public that the club has parted ways with Head Coach Abbey Kikomeko with immediate effect following a comprehensive review of the team’s performance, which fell short of the club’s set technical and competitive expectations,” Mutaka said.

The club also took the rare step of indefinitely suspending the entire senior team backroom staff, including team doctors and assistant coach Simeone Masaba, as part of a “massive internal restructuring.”

Kikomeko’s dismissal comes just months after he signed a two-year contract extension in July 2024, which was meant to keep him at the club until 2027. However, a five-game losing streak—including a 3-1 home defeat to Police FC—forced the board’s hand. Other recent losses came against Vipers SC, KCCA FC, UPDF, and Kitara FC. BUL FC currently has 10 points from 11 matches, sitting only two points above the relegation zone.

Despite the recent slump, the club expressed gratitude for Kikomeko’s past achievements, which included back-to-back FUFA Super 8 titles and guiding BUL FC to a historic second-place finish in the 2023/24 season.

To fill the leadership gap, BUL FC has temporarily promoted its Junior Team Technical Staff to manage senior team duties. The interim unit will be led by Daniel Kabale (Interim Head Coach), assisted by Michael Sebagala, Kenneth Magada, and Fred Batwala.

Rumours in Jinja suggest that former BUL boss Alex Isabirye, who recently departed URA FC, is a frontrunner to return as permanent head coach.
