KAMPALA — Residents of Bamutakudde have turned Saturday mornings into a weekly community clean-up exercise, with Local Council I Chairperson Solomon Serwanjja leading the initiative.
Serwanjja, a veteran investigative journalist who was elected LC1 chairman by a single vote last July, says residents gather every Saturday from 6am to 10am to clean their neighbourhood, clear vegetation and hold community discussions on local concerns.
“Every Saturday 6am – 10am, Bamutakudde shows up for community. From cleaning to community talk, the turn up and energy keeps growing,” Serwanjja said in a post on X on Saturday.
He said the initiative is helping residents build stronger relationships while addressing problems collectively.
“Neighbors becoming family. Problems becoming solutions. When we work together, we win together,” he added.
The weekly exercise takes place as Kampala prepares for the next National Cleaning Day scheduled for August 29, 2026.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki said the authority is strengthening waste collection ahead of the exercise, citing the city’s daily waste generation of between 2,000 and 2,500 tonnes.
According to KCCA, nine private waste collectors have been procured and allocated across Kampala’s nine city divisions. Eight have already obtained operational permits and have a combined capacity to collect 1,469 tonnes of waste per day.
KCCA has an additional daily collection capacity of about 500 tonnes, while the ninth private collector is expected to handle another 200 tonnes.
Government has also provided funding for 10 new garbage trucks and the first phase of a waste management facility at Buyala, intended to support material recovery and waste repurposing during the 2026/27 financial year.
The Bamutakudde initiative, however, illustrates how community-level action can complement city-wide waste management efforts.
The growing Saturday turnout has also attracted attention online, with residents and social media users praising the visible results and the chairman’s hands-on approach to local leadership.
For Bamutakudde residents, the exercise has consequently become more than a waste-clearing campaign, combining environmental cleanliness with neighbourhood mobilisation, accountability and community dialogue.
