Bugweri, Uganda: A 68-year-old school bus driver has died and 15 people, including 13 students, a teacher and a conductor, have been injured after a bus carrying students for a geography study tour crashed into a stationary trailer along the Mbale–Iganga Highway in Bugweri District.
The crash occurred at about 4:45am on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Nawangisa Village when an Isuzu bus registration number UA 551ED, owned by Amuria High School, collided with the rear of a parked Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer registration number UBB 269V.
According to Uganda Police Force, the bus was transporting about 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi District who were travelling to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography study tour.
The deceased driver was identified as Kasakya Abdallah, who died instantly at the scene.
ASP Michael Kasadha, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga East, said preliminary investigations indicate that the bus rammed into the stationary trailer as it travelled from Mbale towards Iganga.
“The Police in Bugweri are investigating a fatal road traffic crash that claimed one life and left 15 people injured,” Kasadha said.
The injured victims were rushed to Iganga General Hospital for medical attention, while the body of the deceased was taken to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer visited the scene and documented evidence as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
Both vehicles have since been towed to Busembatya Police Station pending inspection.
Police said they are investigating circumstances surrounding the crash, including the positioning of the stationary trailer and other possible factors that may have contributed to the collision.
The incident has renewed concerns over road safety, particularly the dangers posed by heavy vehicles parked along highways, especially during night and early morning hours when visibility may be limited.
The Uganda Police Force extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery, while urging motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations.
