NRM drops Magogo from budget committee

KAMPALA, Uganda — July 7, 2026 — The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has made significant changes to its parliamentary committee assignments, dropping long-serving Budget Committee member Moses Magogo from the influential committee and reassigning him to the Human Rights Committee as Parliament finalises the composition of its standing committees for the 12th Parliament.

Magogo, the MP for Budiope East, has served on the Budget Committee for the past five years. His reassignment is one of the most notable changes in the latest committee designations announced by the party leadership.

Also removed from the Budget Committee is Patrick Opolot Isiagi, the MP for Kachumbala County, who previously chaired the committee in the 11th Parliament and is an uncle to former Speaker Anita Among. Isiagi had been a member of the committee throughout the previous Parliament.

The Budget Committee is among Parliament’s most powerful standing committees, scrutinising the national budget and government expenditure before appropriations are approved by the House. It plays a central role in examining fiscal policy, revenue proposals and public spending plans.

In another notable assignment, Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng has designated former Speaker Anita Annet Among, the Bukedea District Woman MP, to the Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation.

The committee is responsible for monitoring government commitments, assurances and undertakings made on the floor of Parliament and assessing whether ministries, departments and agencies have fulfilled those promises.

Meanwhile, the Opposition has designated Francis Zaake, the MP for Mityana Municipality, as Chairperson of the Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation, with Anna Adeke, the Soroti District Woman MP, named Vice Chairperson.

The appointments are part of the ongoing process of constituting Parliament’s standing and sectoral committees following the inauguration of the 12th Parliament. Last week, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja told the House that the Government Chief Whip was finalising committee leadership and membership in accordance with Parliament’s Rules of Procedure.

The latest committee reshuffle comes days after the NRM’s Central Executive Committee named its nominees for the Parliamentary Commission as the ruling party continues to shape the leadership structures of the new Parliament.

Committee assignments are closely watched because they determine lawmakers’ oversight responsibilities, legislative influence and participation in scrutinising government policies and expenditure during the five-year term.
