NAIROBI, Kenya — Ugandan YouTuber and Guinness World Record holder Raymond Kahuma has once again captured public attention after creating a pair of wearable trousers made entirely from chapatis in a stunt that has sparked both amusement and criticism online.
Kahuma, who is based in Kenya and is known for his food-related record attempts and viral content, documented the unusual project in a video shared on his social media platforms. The experiment involved transforming 60 specially prepared chapatis into a pair of trousers weighing approximately 10 kilograms.
According to reports, Kahuma worked alongside a cook and a tailor to produce the garment. The team prepared thick, layered chapatis designed to be flexible enough to bend like fabric while remaining strong enough to be stitched together. They used cling film as a base, applied adhesive to bond the chapatis, and then sewed the sections into a finished pair of trousers.
In the video, Kahuma explained that the chapatis had to be specially made to withstand the tailoring process.
“We needed the chapatis to be layered chapatis so they would be soft and foldable for the trouser fabric, but still very strong to stitch them together,” he said.
The finished beige-coloured trousers were eventually worn by Kahuma, who described the experience as unusual due to their weight and texture.
“They were actually surprisingly heavy, maybe like 10 kilograms,” he noted, adding that they felt “cold and very soft” on the inside.
The stunt quickly generated reactions across social media, with many users praising the creativity behind the project. Others responded with jokes and puns, including comments such as “Chapati never saw Raymond coming,” while some viewers questioned whether food should be used for entertainment when many people continue to face hunger challenges.
Kahuma has built a reputation for turning East African street foods into headline-grabbing projects. He previously earned recognition from Guinness World Records for creating the fastest three chapatis in 3 minutes and 10.22 seconds in Nairobi in November 2023.
He also holds a record for producing the largest Ugandan rolex, weighing 204.6 kilograms, a feat achieved with a team in Wakiso District in 2021 and later verified by Guinness World Records.
The chapati-trouser experiment is the latest in a series of unconventional projects that have helped Kahuma grow his online following, blending food, entertainment and performance art in ways that continue to provoke conversation across East Africa.
